Getting textbooks

We strive to make sure students have reliable access to all the textbooks required for their courses.

Borrowing textbooks in the Information Commons

The Guttman Library situated in the Information Commons offers a RESERVE section for textbooks. To see if your textbook is available for use in the Library, try searching the author or title through the Guttman OneSearch page, or simply come by the Circulation desk for assistance. It is helpful to have the call number, found through Guttman OneSearch, or your professor may have provided it on your syllabus. A call number contains letters and numbers (example: KF8745 .S67 A3 2013) and is not the same as ISBN.

You may also bring your syllabus or simply the name of the book and we can help you locate it.

Please note:

  • Not all textbooks will be available on the first day of class, due to processing and delivery delays.
  • If available, a textbook may be used for three hours at a time within the Information Commons.

  • Write the call number on your syllabus, since you will need it every time you ask for the textbook.
  • Portions of books may be copied or scanned on the machines in the Information Commons. Individuals should never scan or copy a complete book, since that would be a copyright infringement. More info on what you can copy and scan »

Buying and Renting textbooks

Guttman does not have a physical bookstore. Students wishing to purchase or rent books may do so online through the Guttman Online Bookstore.

There are other sources for textbook acquisitions, too. CUNY has compiled a thorough though not exhaustive textbook fact sheet to help students save money when acquiring textbooks.
