Getting textbooks

Students should make sure they have good reliable access to all the textbooks required for their courses.

Buying and Renting textbooks

Guttman does not have a college bookstore. Students wishing to purchase or rent books may do so online. Amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com offer a wide selection of new and used books in print and electronic formats and, for print books, quick delivery.

Other sources for used books include: abebooks.com, alibris.com and powells.com.

Chegg.com and textbookrentals.com are 2 of several websites that offer textbook rentals.

There are other sources for textbook acquisitions, too. CUNY has compiled a thorough though not exhaustive textbook fact sheet to help students save money when purchasing textbooks.

Borrowing textbooks in the Information Commons

The Information Commons is able to buy some textbooks. To see if your textbook is available for use in the Library, try searching the author or title through the Guttman OneSearch page.

How to get a textbook on Reserve: available textbooks must be requested at the Circulation Desk. It is helpful to have the call number, which you may find by searching for the title through Guttman OneSearch page. A call number contains letters and numbers (example: KF8745 .S67 A3 2013) and is not the same as ISBN.

You may also bring your syllabus or simply the name of the book and we can help you locate it.

Please note:

  • Not all textbooks will be available on the first day of class, due to processing and delivery delays.
  • Textbooks on reserve do not circulate, but are kept behind the Circulation Desk.
  • If available, a textbook may be used for three hours at a time within the Information Commons.

Tips:

  • Write the call number on your syllabus, since you will need it every time you ask for the textbook.
  • Portions of books may be copied or scanned on the machines in the Information Commons. Individuals should never scan or copy a complete book, since that would be a copyright infringement. More info on what you can copy and scan »
